The Va. Beach Falcons History
HistoryOriginally founded in the early 1980’s VBRFC was considered the top DIII team in Virginia by the mid 1990’s. Unfortunately by the end of the decade the team dissolved due to lack of organization and membership. It was 4 long years before 3 former VBRFC players got together to reform the Club in late 2003. Since that fateful meeting the Falcons have experienced phenomenal growth, ending the inaugural season with just over 60 players registered through USA Rugby, on the active roster.
The 2005 Campaign looks to be a strong one for the Falcons. Of the 10 weekends on the schedule, VBRFC will be traveling for 7, promoting the team name, and Hampton Roads area Rugby in general. The highlight of the season so far has been the trip to Savannah, GA, for the annual St. Patrick’s Day Rugby Tournament, where we finished in 2nd place.
Along with traveling to matches at various destinations around the state, like poker players who tour from tournament to tournament, the Falcon’s players are active right here in our own community. With the recent development of the Falcons Youth Rugby initiative, the VBRFC will bring rugby to the youth of Hampton Roads, not only promoting the sport, but securing a continuous flow of players for years to come.
Rugby is not the only thing on these men’s minds. Along with raising money for the Special Olympics of Virginia, the team will be participating in the National Multiple Sclerosis Society’s Annual MS Walk. We also will be holding a Holiday Canned Food Drive to benefit the Goodwill of Hampton Roads. Likewise we are putting the finishing touches on our 501-c3 application to be designated a “Non-Profit” corporation.
The Virginia Beach Falcons RFC is a member of the Virginia Rugby Union (VRU), which is one of 3 Regional Unions in the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU). MARFU is a Territorial Rugby Union that reports into USA Rugby, the governing body for all sanctioned Rugby teams in the United States.
